Why We Value the Common Core Education

The Common Core academic standards will provide the foundation for assessing learning at IAS. The classroom curriculum and instructions will be designed and implemented to provide success for all participating students.

The Common Core was developed by building on the best state standards in the United States, examining the expectations of other high-performing countries around the world, and carefully studying the research and literature available on what students need to know and be able to do to be successful in university, career, and life.

What is Common Core?

The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. The Common Core academic standards in mathematics and the language arts are applied throughout other content areas.

What All Parents Should Know

Today’s students are preparing to enter a world in which universities and businesses are demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the Unites States of America, and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level university courses, and workforce training programs. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful. Most states within the United States of America, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) have voluntarily adopted the standards and are moving forward implementing them.

The new standards also provide a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers.

These standards do not tell the teacher how to teach, but provide adequate guidelines in curriculum to measure student performance and skills at each grade level, K-12.
